Week 1
Create a photo that captures contrast—specifically, something old next to something new.
This photo was taken around the old harbor in Würzburg, where you have this nice, old crane close to a modern industrial complex. The difficulty here was to find a unique perspective with both the crane and the industrial complex. I wanted to find something that cannot be seen by simply strolling around. This is where I found this window where you could see the reflection of both objects. The crane is in the foreground, hiding most of the new building, whose orange walls can barely be seen on the lower left corner.
Week 2
Capturing motion ....
Last weekend I was at the 24h of the Nürburgring, perfect for this week's challenge, which is all about conveying movement through photography. I decided to go for a panning shot at 1/40th of a second. In my opinion, this better emphasizes moving nature of the car compared to a photograph at high shutter speed, in which the car would appear to be at standstill. Another added benefit is that tracking the car blurs out the fence which was right in front of me. The picture was taken just before sunset on the straight between the "Dunlop-Kehre" and the "Michael Schumacher-S" curve.
Week 3
A splash of color.
When I got this challenge, the first thing that came to my mind was about a nice landscape with intensive colors. I was walking around the vineyards in Würzburg when I saw this purple flower. I kinda liked the contrast with respect to the green background. By blurring the background I was able to isolate the colorful blossom and remove the distracting "busyness" of the leaves behind. It looks just as if someone was painting a canvas and splashed some purple color onto it. In my opinion the image suits this challenge perfectly. By blurring the background I was able to isolate
Week 4
Abstract
I drew this challenge just before leaving for Iceland and knew exactly what kind of image I wanted to take: the glacial currents of Iceland from the air. I had just gotten my DJI Mini 4pro a few months ago, so it was the perfect opportunity to take that shot. The challenge here was to find a place where I could legally fly the drone without putting myself and others at risk by simply pulling over and parking halfway in the middle of the road.... Thankfully I found this one parking lot where I could safely park the car and walk towards the river bed to fly the drone. This is the shot I got. I really like the contrasting color of the water and the grass (?) as well as the different patterns in the image. Would you have guessed if I hadn't told you?
Week 5
Dramatic Light
I still remember how I took this picture. We had just spent the night in Höfn, Iceland, and were heading towards Vestrahorn. Unfortunately, or luckily if you want, there was so much fog that we could barely see what was in front of us. We decided to continue with our trip towards the east fjords. Then just after the Almannaskarðsgöng tunnel, there was a small patch of cloudless sky which allowed for some sunlight to shimmer through. The reflection it was casting on the lagoon was simply breathtaking, that I had to stop. Luckily, there was a small parking space along the road, which allowed me to take this picture.
Week 6
Typically German
I have to admit, this one was a bit of a challenge.... What is typically German? You might think of Lederhosen, Brezels, and beer, but most of these are typical for Bavaria, a region in southern Germany. I wanted to capture something that applies to Germany as a whole, from north to south, west to east. One thing that fits for sure is cars. Germany loves its cars. And which car screams Germany more than a Volkswagen Golf? It is not by coincidence that Volkswagen literally translates to "people's car". As luck would have it, my friend and brother-in-law Tobi just got one for having fun at the Nürburgring. What better way to complete this challenge than by taking a photo of him in his new car. @Tobi, hope you will have a lot of fun with it!!
